SUMMARY:Policy Hearing: Innovations for Economic Recovery: Childcare and College Students
DESCRIPTION:On April 28th\, Senators Collett\, Cappelletti\, Schwank\, and Comitta will hold a hearing to discuss the challenges facing student and staff at institutions of higher education surrounding childcare. Lack of affordable and accessible childcare has impacted every industry and become dire during the pandemic. Colleges are in a unique position to help bolster the childcare space while preparing current and future economic contributors for the challenges and opportunities in a COVID-endemic world. The hearing will explore the need: with testimony coming directly from students; the means: hearing direction from institutions which offer childcare; and the opportunity and risks involved from researchers and advocates. There is nothing in statute which limits a university or college’s ability to offer childcare and the PASSHE system could use the service as a way to bolster recruitment of both students and staff. Gov. Wolf recently proposed expanding childcare offerings as a way to make the Commonwealth a more attractive and competitive employer. There is no reason our higher education institutions shouldn’t be utilizing the same tactics. \nThis hearing will be held at Montgomery County Community College − Health Sciences Center − Room 1804 with a ZOOM option for those who wish to participate virtually. \nMontgomery County Community College – Blue Bell Campus – Room 1804 in the Health Sciences Center is on the first floor here. \n340 DeKalb Pike\nBlue Bell\, PA 19422 \nIf participating virtually\, register in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwocOGprzMqHNzjciuPLuRybB13Q1HOqjfy
