This past month has been a busy one in Harrisburg!
On March 20th, I stood with my fellow nurses, legislators and patient advocates to introduce a bill (SB 450) to set safe staffing limits for Pennsylvania nurses. We know that when staffing levels are low, nursing care suffers. And when nursing care suffers, patients are at risk.
Other legislation I’m working on includes:
I’m excited to gather support for each of these bills and continue to work on the issues that you care about most.
Celebrating Greek Independence Day
March 25th is Greek Independence Day and as a Greek American, I was excited to introduce a resolution acknowledging and celebrating Greek Independence Day in Pennsylvania. The holiday commemorates the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821, which ultimately restored Greece as a free state after nearly four centuries of oppressive rule under the Ottoman Empire.
At home, I celebrated Greek Independence Day by cooking some of my favorite family recipes, and I invited State Rep. Steve Malagari and his wife Rachel to join us for dinner.
Senior Mobile Office Hours
A few weeks ago, my office began our senior mobile office hours. Our very first visit was to Southampton Estates, and my staff had a great time meeting with residents and talking about the services we can help with! We’re excited to start our regular visits in senior communities across the 12th District!
Around the Town
Spring is here and there’s so much to see and do in the district! I recently finished up my tour of our eight school districts, meeting with superintendents, school board members, and staff to talk about how we can work together to make our schools the best they can be for our students to thrive. And last week, I enjoyed lunch with the life skills class at Upper Moreland High School.
You can tell that big things are happening when you attend two ground breakings in one week! First was the ground breaking for Lion’s Pride Park in Warrington, an innovative and accessible park for all ages and abilities. The following week, I helped break ground for The Pathways at Warrington, a new personal care facility within the Gloria Dei Senior Communities.
I have been visiting companies like PDQ Signature Systems, Hatfield Meats/Clemens Food Group, and Merck – all important employers in our area that continue to innovate, adapt, and provide quality products.
My staff attended the grand opening of Jade Global’s East Coast HQ – they’re an IT and cloud company that began in Silicon Valley, and they’re our new neighbors in the Gwynedd Corporate Center! It’s exciting to see the mainstay businesses that have been in the area for over a century as well as the new businesses that are choosing our communities to take root!
The Wolf Administration’s PFAS Action Team will be holding their next public meeting on Monday, April 15th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Abington Senior High School auditorium (900 Highland Ave, Abington, PA 19001). If you cannot make it to the meeting in person you can submit your remarks to the DEP here. Please call my office with any questions or concerns.
On Earth Day, I’m cosponsoring a free screening of the movie “The Devil We Know” with my friends at Buxmont Coalition for Safer Water. The award-winning documentary follows a group of citizens in West Virginia as they take on the chemical giant Dupont for releasing PFOA into their drinking water for decades. Join us at the Doylestown County Theater on Monday, April 22nd at 7:30 for the film screening, and stick around for a Q&A discussion at 9:00pm to learn more about the PFAS contamination in our area. Register for your free ticket here.
Don’t forget – Monday, April 15th is the last day to file your taxes for 2018! Contact my office if you’re looking for resources to help you file.
Our first district office is open! You can stop in between 9:00am and 4:30pm at the Gwynedd Corporate Center, 1180 Welsh Road, Suite 130, North Wales, PA 19454.
